years’ experience in publishing and have written around 80 books for children. I
specialize in history and global issues and also write on world religions and
human geography topics. I am currently a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at

Famous
Lives: Anne Frank (9–11)
Hodder
Wayland, 2001
The
first book I wrote, and still my title that is most borrowed from
libraries.

Global
Questions: Why Do People Seek Asylum? (11–14)
Franklin
Watts, 2008
One of
several books that I have written about refugees. I aim to present
different viewpoints in a non-judgemental way as a basis for discussion.

Moving to
Britain from Somalia (7–9)
Franklin
Watts, 2008
This is
one of four titles in this series that I wrote; Howard Davies took the
photos. We worked closely with Fahad (featured on the cover) and allowed
him and his family to tell their story.

Talking
About My Faith: I am Muslim (6–8)
Franklin
Watts, 2005
This is
one of a series produced by working with individual children and their
families to help readers to understand people of different faiths.

|
Atlas of
World Faiths: Judaism (11–14)
Franklin
Watts, 2007
For
this book and the Islam title in the same series, I combined my
knowledge of world religions and history.

|

|
Signs and Symbols: Hinduism (7–9)
Wayland, 2008
This series of four titles was a different take on the usual world
religions titles and presented quite a challenge to write. Each book
includes lively religious stories, poems, songs and folk tales.

Questioning History: The Arab-Israeli Conflict (11–14)
Wayland,
2008 (reprint)
I have
a particular interest in the Middle East conflict and presenting the
various viewpoints fairly. A review in the School Library Journal noted
that ‘Throughout,
the tone is nonjudgmental. Neither Palestinians nor Israelis are
represented as wholly in the right or without blame for violent
attacks.’

Talk About Racism
Wayland, 2008
Racism changes over time; I believe it is important to produce
children’s books on the topic to aid discussion of how racism manifests
itself and how to prevent it.

How to Get
Ahead in Catering (11–16)
Raintree,
2006
Careers
books were a new departure for me; I interviewed school students on work
experience, catering students and workers in the industry, allowing them
to tell their own story about their working life.

Letters
From Around the World: Saudi Arabia
(Cherrytree,
2007)
I’ve
written several books in this human geography series, which combines a
child’s personal experience of living in a country with general
information about life there.
