I have been writing children's illustrated information books full-time for
ten years now. I've written over 200 books, specialising mainly in geography /
earth science / countries, environment, history and natural history, also social
issues such as bullying and racism. I also write basic science including on the
human body, and on art and artists. My book I'm Special about disability for
young readers was shortlisted for the NASEN Special Needs Awards. Much of my
writing is for 7 to 11 year-olds, but I've also written extensively for 5 to 7s
and for over 11s. I write for both the trade and school / library markets.
I received a doctorate from the University of Sussex in 1982. I then worked in
publishing for 15 years, first as an editor and later editorial director
(1981-1996) before becoming a full-time freelance writer. This gave me an
in-depth knowledge of how publishing works and what editors want! I also
regularly undertake editorial, project management, consultancy and series
development work.
