Philip Steele

I have many years experience of writing children's information books for the international market (schools, libraries and general trade). Much of my published work consists of history topics and reference, junior biographies, lands and peoples, also the natural world. I also write books for older children, exploring contentious social issues such as freedom of speech. Writing for adults includes guides and histories of North Wales, where I live.

I have a great deal of in-house experience as editor and project manager. As a freelance writer I am used to working with packagers and publishers, with consultants, designers, artists, picture researchers and editors. I enjoy submitting original ideas and planning new material, but I can also work quickly to a tight brief from the client. I can cope with a multiplicity of deadlines.

Current clients include Dorling Kindersley, Kingfisher (Macmillan Children's  Books), Wayland (Hachette Children's Books), Quarto Children's and Carlton.

Eyewitness; TREASURE

Dorling Kindersley 2010

This dazzler of a book looks at treasure hoards, tombs and beautiful arts and crafts. It visits archaeological digs and ancient shipwrecks. It also asks questions. Why do we value the things that we do? Why has treasure always brought out the best and the worst in human nature? Why is the theme of treasure rooted in our mythology, our folklore and our dreams?  My previous Eyewitness titles have included Ancient Iraq/Mesopotamia (2007) and Vote (2008). More are on the way!

Documenting History: SLAVERY AND CIVIL RIGHTS

Wayland 2009

This is an account of slavery with a particular focus on the history of West Africa, the Caribbean, the United States and the United Kingdom. It takes the story forward from abolition to issues such as segregation, the civil rights movement and racism, and slavery around the word in the 21st century. The text is backed by source material such as letters, diaries, songs, speeches and posters.

Navigators:ANCIENT ROME

Kingfisher 2009

This fresh title traces Rome's long journey, from its foundation to its days as a  great empire. Vivid illustrations and photography bring to life  battles on land and sea, and explore city streets, markets, home life, temples, aqueducts and arenas.  This book follows my earlier Navigators: Knights and Castles (2008) and another title in this series is currently in preparation.

20th Century Lives: CAMPAIGNERS

Wayland 2009

A short introduction to the lives of twentieth century people who changed the world by their campaigns in the fields of human rights, the environment, social and political justice.
